Scary Spooky Bats at Halloween?

Think of Halloween and you probably think of witches, ghosts, ghouls and bats.

Truth is, we probably should be a bit wary of witches, ghosts and ghouls – but you needn’t be frightened of bats!

Cornwall Environmental Consultants (CEC), the trading arm of Cornwall Wildlife Trust, often find themselves re-assuring people that bats are not the spooky scary creatures often perceived. They are in fact rather cute and fluffy. They are not blind. They do not fly into your hair. Most importantly they are not vermin. They are actually a vital part of our eco-systems. In fact, vineries abroad have been encouraging bats to their vineyards to act as natural pest control – saving themselves money by cutting down on expensive pesticides.

CEC undertakes bat surveys throughout the year, with clients ranging from the general public to large developers. Bats and their roosts are protected by law, so if you are applying for planning permission and fall into the criteria of requiring a bat survey, it is not advisable to ignore it.

Instead, CEC would ask you to view these creatures in a different way and appreciate their importance as part of our natural environment. They are great pest controllers if you are a gardener, and they do not cause any damage to your property.

Bats should now be seeking out suitable places for hibernation. If you find a bat that doesn’t look well, or is grounded, please contact the Bat Conservation Trust on 0345 1300 228.
