Biodiversity Net Gain in Cornwall

Recent legislation mandates that major developments must leave nature in a better state than before, hence the term Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). CEC has developed a programme to support developers through this complex area, including BNG for major sites, minor sites and riverine habitats.

Botanical Surveys

CEC has thirty years of experience of NVC surveys which have included large areas of Dartmoor and Salisbury Plain, numerous nature conservation sites within Cornwall, and some sensitive development sites.

Building with Nature

Building with Nature (BwN) is an accreditation scheme for green infrastructure. The BwN standards are free to use, so our team can help you integrate the standards or assess your project ready for an accreditation application.

EcIA – Ecological Impact Assessment

Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA) are a process of identifying, quantifying and evaluating the potential effects of development related or other proposed actions on habitats, species or ecosystems.

Ecological Survey Calendar

We have created this ecological survey calendar to help plan your project or development.

ECOW – Ecological Clerk of Works

An Ecological Clerk of Works (ECOW) provides a supervisory service on construction sites; where there are ecological risks, we have provided ECOW teams to major projects across the South West.

HRA – Habitats Regulations Assessment

If your project could impact on a European designated site, you will need a Habitats Regulations Assessment; we support clients with this assessment.

Invasive Species

Invasive non-native species such as Japanese knotweed, Himalayan Balsam and Giant Hogweed can add significant cost to your development. Our team has the experience and knowledge to help you manage invasive species.

Mitigation, Licenses & Management

Many projects require long term monitoring to ensure their plans proceed as planned. This includes monitoring under protected species mitigation licenses, assessing long term European Designated Sites impacts, and for Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). CEC can develop suitable monitoring schemes and undertake the monitoring visits and reporting for your project.

MoRPH River Surveys

A Modular River Physical Survey (MoRPh) is a survey of river structure and habitats, which is needed to inform a Biodiversity Net Gain assessment if your project has a watercourse on or next to it.

PEA – Preliminary Ecological Appraisal

A Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA) or Phase 1 Habitat Survey is often required with your planning application and gives an overview of the ecological status of your land.

Protected Species Surveys

Many species, such as bats, barn owls, otters, badgers, dormouse, reptiles and birds are protected under law, and therefore developers need to carry out surveys to see which species are on a site and develop a plan to protect them.

Small Sites BNG Metric

Recent legislation mandates that significant developments must leave nature in a better state than before, hence the term Biodiversity Net Gain. CEC has developed a programme to support developers through this complex area.

Testimonials

Working closely alongside CEC on the design proposals for the Cornwall Cycle Hub was a real pleasure for us, CEC provided excellent technical knowledge and thoroughly considered landscape design input to the project. We were impressed with their collaborative and involved approach, and their quick turnaround of key items of information, helping the project stay on programme and run smoothly. Both the Landscape and Ecology team were supportive and helpful at all stages, not only to us as Architects, but also in their support and advice to the wider client team. We look forward to working together in the future to realise the design envisaged for the site.

“CEC advised on, and programmed, all the ecological surveys for our large-scale project to help the planning preparation phase progress smoothly. We had great communications with them, and they were a really valuable part of the project team.

“We have learnt to take a step back and think of ways in which the landscape, habitats, cattle, business can work together. We have learnt a lot in this project. The adviser who came out to see us was just brilliant. It has opened my eyes to things that were right in front of me that I was not aware of. For instance, we choose not to use ivermectin as a wormer on our dry cows, which means dung beetles in our grazing fields aren’t harmed, which in turn positively effects other insects, bats and birds, having a positive impact on the biodiversity of our farm landscape. I had no idea that I am able to support wildlife on the farm through little things like this, that make a big difference.”
