New hotel goes green!
The Cornwall Hotel Spa & Estate in St Austell is currently under construction and will open in February 2010. The development, which will focus on a 65 bedroom 4-star hotel, includes extensive refurbishment to the Grade II listed White House, an extension to accommodate a brasserie restaurant and bedroom blocks, together with the construction of 60, 2 and 3 bedroom woodland homes around the site.
Cornwall Environmental Consultants (CEC) Ltd were employed by CMR (Leisure) Ltd to design and implement a green & sustainable landscape plan for the project. A detailed hard and soft landscape scheme was developed by CEC’s landscape team including extensive planting of native trees and shrubs, a Cornish style sub-tropical walled garden and contemporary courtyards at the main hotel and spa.
CEC’s ecology department were responsible for reptile relocation and monitoring, and undertook work to protect badgers on the site. European Protected Species Licenses for bats were also required and several new artificial bat roosts were constructed on site.
Birgit Höntzsch, CEC’s Senior Landscape Architect commented;
‘It was a challenge to design a landscape scheme for this very beautiful site that addresses all the ecological, historical and hydrological constraints while at the same time being of a quality fitting a 4 star hotel. CEC was ideally placed to work on this large project due to our extensive in-house resources including ecologists, landscape architects and arboricultural consultants combined with our company ethos to fully embrace sustainable and biodiverse design solutions. Our landscape design approach made full use of existing resources on site such as impressive old specimen trees, a wide parkland meadow landscape,a beautiful walled garden, and we utilised native plants and accentuated core areas of the scheme with formal planting.’
The works carried out by both the landscape and the ecology departments of Cornwall Environmental Consultants ensured that existing wildlife on site is still able to call the site their home, and will hopefully encourage other wildlife to move in too. The design represents a sustainable, environmentally friendly solution and CEC are proud to have been able to assist CMR (Leisure) Ltd to create such an outstanding hotel.
