Bournemouth Pier Approach
The second phase of public realm improvement works at Bournemouth Pier Approach is nearing completion.
Cornwall Environmental Consultants (CEC) acted as Lead Design Consultants for both phases, and has enjoyed the challenges and rewards the project has provided. Hydrock provided engineering support and Alun Griffiths Contractors worked through the often very wet, and sometimes snowy winter conditions, to deliver the design.
The first phase was successfully opened to the public in May 2016, and the second phase is due to be fully complete in May this year. The scheme has already received many positive comments from local businesses, residents and visitors and Bournemouth Borough Council are thrilled with the results.
Small details can make a big difference to the overall appearance – such as man-hole covers where cover infill paving has been matched to the surrounding patterns. The first phase included installation of trees using underground cells for tree roots, and the results are apparent with trees establishing very well. The scheme also includes a novel solution of semi-submerged bins, which provide a greater capacity for rubbish.
Birgit Hontzsch, CEC’s Principal Landscape Architect visited the site recently and was delighted with how it has all come together;
“It’s great to see the Pier Approach in use by the public with both phases now nearly complete. I saw people relaxing on the newly installed precast walls and seating blocks, and children enjoying the open spaces and water features. We can’t wait to see the fully completed scheme in May, when all planting areas will be installed, and finishing touches put to the paving areas.”
