West Penwith ESA – NVC Surveys
CEC were commissioned by Natural England to carry out Phase 1 Habitat and National Vegetation Classification (NVC) Surveys over 800ha within the West Penwith Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA). This was a difficult area to survey being a remote area, predominantly of open moorland and heath. Added to this the survey work had to be carried out during winter which presented an additional challenge.
A series of 29 different sites were surveyed according to standard methodologies. Using quadrats the vegetation was sampled in detail, plant species were identified and data was gathered regarding their distribution and abundance. This allowed all vegetation types to be mapped in detail. The resultant data was digitised and a report was produced to present the findings along with discussions and recommendations for the future management of this important historic and bio-diverse landscape.
