Truro-based environmental professionals Cornwall Environmental Consultants (CEC) have prepared a 10 year Landscape and Ecology Management Plan for the iconic Cornish Cross site in Saltash, Cornwall. Located at the western end of the Tamar Bridge, the Cornish Cross was installed in 2013, stands 20m (66ft) high and marks the gateway to Cornwall on the A38.

The Cross is located in Elwell Woods, a community park and woodland which has been rescued by local volunteers over the last three years. CEC worked with the Friends of Elwell Woods to produce a 10 year Management Plan, ensuring the site develops in the way the group intends now that upkeep of the site is in the hands of Saltash Town Council. Features include an orchard, wildflower meadow, fitness equipment, a picnic area, woodland and the Cornish Cross itself.

Local resident and Cornwall Councillor Joe Ellison who helped to lead the refurbishment project said:
“We have worked hard to bring this area back for local people who have been tremendous in their support. With the help of local residents, the Air Cadets and Cornwall Wildlife Trust we have created a real community asset. CEC’s Management Plan will help us to organise our work so that the site continues to develop as a great place for people and for wildlife”.

CEC Director Phil Hills added, “We were delighted to work with Mr Ellison and the Friends group to make sure that they got the plan they wanted. Everyone involved in the site can now see what they need to do each year and I’m looking forward to popping in from time to time to see how the site is coming along.”

CEC’s team of landscape architects and ecologists work to enrich the biodiversity of the South West, covenanting their profits to Cornwall Wildlife Trust.
